Plenary Lecture: “What long-term data tell us about a short-lived foundation species”
I am a Research Ecologist in the Marine Science Institute at UC Santa Barbara and the ecology of giant kelp forest communities has been the focus of my research for over 40 years. Determining the mechanisms that allow kelp forests to recover from natural disturbance, and the application of this knowledge to restoration programs designed to mitigate impacts caused by human disturbance has been an ongoing theme of my research. Much of my work in this area the last two decades has been done in association with the Santa Barbara Coastal Long-Term Ecological Research program and the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Mitigation Monitoring program.
